Ayame Iizumi

Painter & Artist

Profile

Ayame Iizumi is an artist whose work centers on the theme of life. Through the use of color and bodily expression, she has explored the impulses, dynamism, and invisible forces that underlie living existence.

In recent years, her recent practice has come to focus on prayer as a fundamental human act. Using norito and language as motifs, she extrudes and layers paint to create works in which accumulated strata function both as traces of passing prayer and as sedimentations of time.

Working with text, layers, and emptiness as primary elements, she presents a world in which individual life resonates with a greater continuity of life. Her practice includes painting, live painting, and mural work.

Statement

My practice began with a question: what is life?

Through color and bodily expression, I have continued to explore the impulses and dynamism that life carries within it. Through this process, my work has gradually come to focus on prayer as a fundamental human act.

For me, prayer is not a specifically religious act, but a primal movement through which existence continues to relate to the world. Using norito and language as motifs, I extrude and layer paint in order to materialize this invisible movement.

The layers that appear in my work are traces of passing prayer, and at the same time sedimentations of time. The white emptiness suggests the cosmos, while gold evokes prayer and the radiance of life. Through the interplay of text, layers, and emptiness, individual life and a greater continuity of life resonate within a single pictorial field.

Through making, I seek to quietly offer a sense of human life held within a larger continuity.
